Object of the game

Players tries to be the first to get rid of all of the cards in their hands. Players try to form matched sets (3 or 4 of a kind) or run (3 or more of the same suit).

Set: 7 diamond7 heart7 club

Run: 6 spade7 spade8 spade

Note: a single card cannot belong to two sets.

Nonvalid intersecting melds

Deal

Choose a dealer randomly to deal the first round. The winner of each round deals the next.

Shuffle and cut

Shuffle the deck and deal 10 cards to each player if there are 2 players and 7 cards if there are 3 to 4 players. Players can then look at and sort their cards.

Opening card

After the deal is complete the next card is placed face up on the table to start the discard pile. This card also determines the maximum number of points a player can have remaining in his hand when he knocks. For example, if the face value of the card is 10, then a player may knock with 10 points or fewer. If it's a 7, a player may knock with 7 or less.

Players may adopt the rule that if the upcard is an ace, a player may only go out with a gin hand.

Players may also apply the Spades Double rule. If the upcard is a spade, all points in that hand will count double.

Draw pile

After dealing and starting the discard pile, the remaining cards are placed face down next to the discard pile and is called the draw pile.

Play

Each normal turn consists of two parts

1. Draw - top card from the draw pile or draw a card from the top of the discard pile.

2. Discard - card face up on top of the discard pile.

On the first turn of each round, a non-dealer decides whether or not to take the first face up card. If that player declines, the dealer may take the card. If a non-dealer takes the card, that player completes his turn by discarding and the other player takes his turn. If both players decline to take the card, the non-dealer starts the game by drawing the top card from the draw pile.

Going out

Each player tries to dispose of all the cards in their hand. When a player gets rid of all his cards, he wins. There are three ways to be victorious in a round of Oklahoma Gin: to go Gin, Knock & Undercut.

  • Gin - Player melds all the cards in his hand, all at once, and discards his last card. All this while having no deadwood left in his hand
  • Knock - Player melds all the cards in his hand and his deadwood count is equal to the opening card's face value or lower. This can be done on any turn, including the first turn after drawing but before discarding. You are not required to knock. You can continue playing to develop a better hand.
  • Undercut - Players' deadwood count is equal to the knocker's or lower

After a players Gin, opponents can lay down their melds to reduce their deadwood count and reduce penalty points.

After a players Knock, the defeated competitor may lay down their melds and add matching cards to the knocker's original melds only. This helps the defeated players reduce their penalty points.

Scoring

Each player calculates the value of their unmatched cards. If the knocker's count is lower, he scores the difference between the two counts. If the knocker did not go gin and the values are equal, or the knocker's value is greater than his opponent's, then the knocker has been undercut. The knocker's opponent scores 10 points plus the difference between the values.

Going Gin - earns the player 25 bonus points. Defeated contenders double the amount of their deadwood count as penalty points.

Undercut - recompenses the winner with 20 points, and their vanquished opponents receive the difference in the counts of the winner's deadwood and their own count as penalty points.

Knock - rewards the winner with 10 points, and his defeated opponents are all credited with their deadwood count minus the Knocker's deadwood count as penalty points.

Draws

If only 2 cards remain in the draw pile after a player discards and neither player has knocked, the round ends in a draw The same player deals again.

Winning

Additional rounds are played until one player's cumulative score reaches 100 points or more. That player is the winner.

Note: Oklahoma Gin should not be confused with Oklahoma, which is also a Rummy game but not based on Gin Rummy. If you are not familiar with Gin Rummy, you should review the Gin Rummy Instructions.
