Object of the game

Each player tries to form matched sets (3 or 4 of a kind) or sequences (3 or more of the same suit).

Set: 7 diamond7 heart7 club

Sequence: 6 spade7 spade8 spade

Each player tries to dispose of all the cards in their hand. When a player gets rid of all his cards, he wins. There are three ways to get rid of the cards:

  • melding
  • laying off
  • discarding

Shuffle and cut

Players draw or cut for the deal, lowest card deals first. Dealer shuffles and the player on the dealer’s right cuts.

Deal

Dealer serves out one card at a time, clockwise and face down starting with the player on his left.

Each player receives:

– 2 players receive 10 cards each
– 3-4 players receive 7 cards each
– 5-6 players receive 6 cards each

The remaining cards are placed face down on the table forming the stock. The top card on the stock pile is placed face up on the table next to the stock pile. This will be the start of the discard pile.

Play

Each player in turn, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer can do one of the following:

1. Draw a card from the stock pile adding it to his hand
2. Draw a card from the discard pile adding it to his hand

After the draw the player may optionally lay down face up on the table any meld (matched set or sequence). If the player chooses not or is unable to lay down a meld, he discards a card face up on the discard pile. If a player has drawn from the discard pile during the current turn, he may not discard the drawn card during this turn.

Laying off

A player in turn may add one or more cards from his hand to a matched set or sequence.

If the player has a matched set on the table of:

7 diamond7 heart, he can add 7 spadeto the meld.

If the player has a sequence on the table of:

6 spade7 spade8 space, he can add 5 spadeor 9 spadeto the meld.

Going out

When a player gets rid of all his cards, he wins. If the remaining cards that the winner is holding are matched he may lay them down on his last turn without discarding. This ends the game and there is no further play.

If no player has gone out and the last card has been drawn from the stack, the next player in turn may either of the following:

1. Take a card from the top of the discard pile
2. Turn the discard pile over to make a new stock without shuffling and then draw from the top

Scoring

All players pay the winner the face value of the cards in their hands. Face cards have a value of 10 points and aces 1 point each.

A player goes Rummy when he is able to get rid of all the cards he holds at once, without formerly having laid down or laid off any cards. If this happens, all other players pay him double or twice what his opponents would normally owe.
