RUMMY — Russian Rummy card game rules
Russian Rummy Number of players Deck used Number of decks
Dealer shuffles the required number of decks together and deals each player 13 cards face down. After dealing, the next card is placed in the center of the table face up. This is the start of the discard pile. The remainder of the deck is placed face down on the table next to the discard pile and is called the stock pile. Players try to go out at the end of the game with the lowest score. Each player tries to form and meld matched sets or books, and runs or straights, in accordance with the Basic Contract rules. Example of a matched set or book — Important: In Russian Rummy the suites are irrelevant so that a book may contain 2 or 3 cards of the same rank and suit. A books set such as: Example of a run or straight — A 4 card straight: The same card cannot be used for both a set and a run. In the example shown below the 8
Aces are always the last card on a straight and cannot go around the corner. Straights may not "go round the corner" Valid: Not valid: In Russian Rummy there are 5 individual deals and 5 basic contracts. Examples are shown below. First deal — 2 books required
Second deal — 1 straight required
Third deal — 2 books and 1 straight required
Fourth deal — 3 books required
Fifth deal — 2 straights and 1 book required
There are two main actions in Russian Rummy, the draw and discard. Draw (required) — A card can be taken from the stock or discard pile. Discard (required) — After drawing a card you must discard a card from your hand, face down on top of the discard pile. Game play starts with the player to the left of the dealer who draws his first card from the stock or discard pile. Any person in turn has the right to take a card from the discard pile but if he chooses not to take it, then the first person to say "I want it" in Russian, can take it and also is obliged to take a penalty card from the stock pile. Learn to say "I want it" Play then moves to the left (clockwise). The game continues until one player gets rid of all of his cards. The cards left in the hands of the losing players count as penalty points against them. In turn, a player that meets the requirements of a contract, may lay down all of his cards face up. After the winning player lays down his cards forming a valid contract, he can lay off on other players book and straights. The joker is a wild card and can substitute any card in a meld. The player should declare what card it represents when melding. A joker placed on the table in a meld can be taken by any player who can replace it with the card the joker represents. The player must do this during his turn and only after they have laid down their books and straights. They must lay off all of their cards. If there remains only one card on the stock pile during a players turn and he does not want to take the card on the discard pile, then the discard pile is shuffled with the remaining stock card and this new pile is placed on the table to start a new stock pile. There is no knocking in Russian Rummy. Therefore, if a winning player in turn melds all of his cards face up on the table in straights or books required for a specific contract and if needed, discards his last card he wins that hand. The winner may not lay down any more books or straights than specified for that particular hand. The other players count the cards left in their hands. They card values are calculated as follows.
There is a special rule for the last hand. A player may not lay down his straight and books until he has every card in place in his hand and can lay them down without a discard. Unlike the other hands, only one player will lay down and everyone else must count all the cards in their hand to add to their penalty score.
